The disastrous flooding wreaking human and environmental havoc on the east of the Australian continent is getting labelled as “unprecedented” and a once-in-a-generation or even in 1,000 years event.

A thousand years. A generation. It all constitutes a lot of time on this continent in the consciousness of Australian people who come from convict/settler/colonial – or later immigrant – stock.
